What are Ceramides?
Ceramides are lipids (oils) found naturally in skin and make up over 50 percent of its composition. As the most abundant part of skin they are crucial to support the skin barrier; essentially holding skin together and protecting it from dehydration, signs of sensitivity, and environmental attack. Without ceramides, skin can become dry, itchy, or irritated.
To understand ceramides better, think of your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis), as a protective brick wall-like structure. It is comprised of corneocytes (bricks) held in place by a defined ratio of intercellular lipids, consisting of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids (cement).
While we are young the skin produces plenty of natural ceramides but as we age, environmental damage, especially sun damage, means that the quality and quantity of ceramides in our skin is depleted.
When ceramide levels are low, the skin’s barrier is weakened (imagine gaps in the cement of that brick wall). This weakened skin barrier both allows water to escape (making skin dehydrated), and allows external aggressors such as allergens and pollutants to enter the skin.
That’s why ceramides are an essential part of having and maintaining beautiful, youthful-looking skin. Applying ceramides directly to skin, protects the skin barrier and retains moisture, for skin that is once again plump and hydrated.
