Skincare routine for oily skin

Oily skin is probably one of the most misunderstood of skin types. Prone to excess sebum production, blackheads, open pores and breakouts, many try to tackle it by drying out the skin with harsh skincare and exfoliants.

But subjecting an oily skin type to this kind of regime can actually make it a whole lot worse. How? All skin types need adequate amounts of oil to function properly. In fact, your skin’s natural barrier function relies on it to keep bacteria out and hydration in.

So, when we strip the skin of moisture, the skin barrier becomes impaired and unable to carry out its functions properly. This leads the dermis to become ‘leaky’ and unable to retain water in the way it did before. It then quickly tries to rectify the problem by creating even more oil. And so, the cycle continues.

So, how can you reduce excess sebum in oily skin while ensuring it remains healthy? Follow our simple CeraVe routine to find out.

Cleanser for oily skin

The first step in an oily skincare routine should always be a gentle cleanse to remove makeup, impurities, and dirt from the skin. CeraVe Foaming Cleanser gently cleanses and purifies the skin while strengthening the natural barrier with 3 Essential Ceramides. As it’s gentle and fragrance free, it also won’t dry out your complexion.

For oiliness and roughness on your body, you may be tempted to tackle it with physical exfoliants. But as this can damage the skin’s protective barrier and create micro tears and irritation, it’s actually much more effective to use formulas containing chemical exfoliants such as CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser. This gentle non-comedogenic cleanser helps to tackle dry and bumpy skin, including Keratosis Piliaris, with exfoliating Salicylic Acid and hydrating Hyaluronic Acid. For enhanced results, follow it with CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream.

Your next step should be a hydrating treatment that will help to lock in the moisture that we now know is essential in keeping excess oil at bay. CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum provides 24-hour hydration with a formula rich in 3 Essential Ceramides, Vitamin B5 and the super humectant Hyaluronic Acid. Apply to the face to lock in moisture for 24 hour hydration.

Once your serum has had time to soak in, follow it with a lightweight moisturiser that will hydrate your oily skin without overloading it. CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Cream with SPF is a great option as it helps to protect the skin’s barrier with three naturally occurring ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid while defending it from UVA and UVB damage with SPF25. Patented MVE® delivery technology also helps to deliver a controlled release of long-lasting hydration throughout the day. Its non-comedogenic formula also spreads easily and dries clear without adding any additional congestion to the pores.

In the evening, you’ll need to repeat the same steps again (cleansing, hydrating, and protecting), but this time using a moisturiser formulated specifically for the night-time.CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion works in a similar way to CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Cream by supporting and hydrating the skin barrier, but without the SPF protection.

As with all skincare routines, the best results are seen with consistency. By making these simple steps part of your everyday beauty routine, you should start to see a reduction in oiliness and congestion and a marked improvement in your overall skin health.
