Do you have strawberry skin?

What is strawberry skin?

Strawberry skin gets its name from its pitted appearance, which resembles strawberry seeds. It is most commonly found on the legs and upper arms but can also appear elsewhere on the face and body. While it doesn’t usually hurt or itch, its symptoms, which include darkened open pores and black or brown spots, can cause embarrassment.

What causes strawberry legs?

Strawberry legs are the result of enlarged pores or hair follicles trapping dead skin, oil or bacteria. This is quite common after shaving, which opens hair follicles and exposes them to impurities. Clogged pores also naturally produce more oil, which can turn into a blackhead when exposed to the air. Other skin conditions that can cause textured skin include folliculitis (when follicles become infected) or keratosis pilaris (a genetic condition that resembles goosebumps usually on the upper arms and thighs).

As shaving can encourage strawberry skin, it helps to do it right. Use shaving cream and a sharp razor to prevent irritation and razor burn. Moisturise daily and before and after shaving to keep your skin from drying out. Look for moisturisers with hydrating and comforting ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid and ceramides, which help to restore your skin’s barrier to lock in moisture. Niacinamide-rich creams can help to soothe any discomfort too.

Exfoliating regularly can also prevent dead skin cells from clogging pores and rough skin on the face and body. Salicylic Acid helps to keep your pores clear by encouraging the skin to shed dead cells. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream is enriched with Salicylic Acid to gently exfoliate the skin without comprising its natural barrier. Its combination of three essential ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid also helps to lock in moisture and provide hydration for up to 24 hours, leaving rough and bumpy skin feeling smoother.
